Self-doubt is the other side of the confidence coin.

In a world where everything is about self-confidence as a market commodity, self-doubt is an undesirable asset.

We believe that if you doubt yourself too much, you won’t take action, stand up for what you believe for, or fight for your rights. You will be a loser. 

It is okay to doubt yourself. Here is why.

1. Confidence without Self-doubt Distorts the Truth

This perception or interpretation of confidence exclusively through its market value is wrong. Social (market) comparisons makes us powerless to produce true, meaningful, deeply satisfying change on our own. 

When you trade with your confidence socially, you gamble with your core values. You take action that is not aligned with your core self. 

Confidence is highly praised (and appraised) on the pyramid of social traits/values.

Therefore, to invest in your confidence, you need to sacrifice something else, potentially the larger and the deeper truth. 

2. Self-Doubt, Mental Security, and Overconfidence

We tend to look for and live in secure mental frameworks that give meaning to our world. This can make you overconfident.

Unhealthy, exaggerated overconfidence borders on fundamentalist beliefs. If you are too sure that you are never wrong, you will lack the empathy to embrace conflicting opinions. You will make individualistic decisions.

Self-serving decisions are not always bad. But they can be, when your confidence is unrealistic in the larger scheme of things and your self-development. 

3. Embrace the Positive Side of Self-doubt

It can be hard to manage our confidence levels.

The main reason for this difficulty is because confidence is based on porous internal feelings that are judged and measured on an external socially acceptable scale.

Broken confidence or confidence painted with self-doubt can make you anxious and uncertain. However, it is an opportune path to growth.

When you are too confident, you may lack the humbleness and the modesty necessary for making mindset and behavioral shifts.

A speck of self-doubt is necessary for personal development.

You will never outgrow your current self unless you question it and try to change it in some way.

3 Things You Should Never Doubt

You should never doubt yourself about three things:

  • Self-respect,
  • Human decency, and
  • Dignity.

Self-doubt is not identical to feeling less confident about your value as a human being. As humans, we all deserve respect, dignity, and just treatment.

You should never compromise, jeopardize or trade your inherent self-confidence and worth as a human.

But you can play with the pluses and minuses of confidence on the social measurement scale, whatever that may mean in the social context you currently find yourself in.

How to Develop Healthy Self-doubt

To adopt healthy self-doubt that will not erode your essential worth, do the following:

  1. Think of your beliefs about yourself or everything else, to that matter, as a scientist. 
  2. Never be 100-percent sure that you are absolutely right under all circumstances.
  3. Give yourself a little leeway to change your mind, change your life, and build your new self. 

When you play with doubt in an aloof way without attachment, you have a chance to shut up those inner insecure voices.

You don’t need to be completely confident in everything you do.  But do it anyway.

Self-doubt can be as beneficial as fear. Doubt and fear both exist as counterparts to confidence and love, but you live with them anyway. Don’t let the lack of anything cripple you into staying stuck on either side of the assertiveness scale spectrum.
